This is the art of the Tlingit spruce root basketry.
Inspired by the patterns, landscapes, and stories that have shaped my artistic practice, this collection reimagines Tlingit basket weave patterns in a contemporary textile form.
Each pattern embodies a memory of place, family, and the natural world—from the forests and shorelines of Yakutat to the enduring relationships between people, animals, and land. Read on.

Basket Case is a collaboration between Jennifer Younger and American Dakota, inspired by the enduring beauty of Tlingit spruce root basketry.
Working closely with Jennifer, the design team sought to honor the cultural significance of traditional basket patterns while preserving their authenticity. Equally inspiring was the rich patina that develops on baskets through years of use, reflecting the lives and hands that have cared for them.
Together, Jennifer and the design team selected a contemporary two-tone color palette, creating a fresh interpretation of these timeless designs. Blue is a celebration of how tradition can be respectfully preserved, thoughtfully reimagined, and carried forward into modern homes.

Looking forward means creating new opportunities in contemporary design for Spruce Root patterns to continue capturing memories.
Preservance is a reminder of what it takes to preserve cultural knowledge, and the perseverance of generations of Tlingit artists and master weavers who have sustained the Spruce Root art.
These designs are not simply patterns—they hold memories of towering spruce trees, wild strawberry patches, and the presence of bears within the rainforest homeland of the Tlingit people. Through these rugs, traditional patterns continue carrying their stories into your home.
